Saltburn-by-the-Sea part 2

On Tuesday (27th) we went to Middlesbrough for the day. We started with a picnic in Albert Park, a lovely and huge park fairly near the centre of town.

After the park we went to the Dorman Museum, which was next to the park. The children really enjoyed looking around at everything inside. Probably their favourite exhibit was the huge collection of stuffed birds and eggs with nests (which were mostly over 100 years old). There were also fossils and other interesting things.

After the museum we went to the Transporter Bridge, which we got to ride across on (a sort of hanging basket that takes cars & people from one side to the other). After the bridge we finished the evening with some dinner in Pizza Hut.

On Wednesday (28th) we had a fun day at the Mohons, and the children enjoyed playing with their 3 grandchildren. The above photo shows them digging potatoes in the allotment, where Mrs Mohon grows lots of lovely vegetables!

Thursday (29th) was a quieter day as we got ready for leaving the next day. We did a bit of shopping in Redcar etc.

Friday (30th) we got up early and left Saltburn before 8am in an effort to get to Newcastle without being held up with too much morning traffic. It was good we left early, as we had a bit of a disaster on the way with Benjamin vomiting in the hire car! (Which we now know can be an expensive experience, as we're told there will probably be a fee of about 50 pounds for them to valet it!) So anyway, we had to stop alongside the road to clean up Benjamin and the car, before continuing on to Newcastle. Peter dropped me, children & luggage at the train station and then took the hire car back. We had a quiet and uneventful journey to Edinburgh from there. Once we got to Edinburgh, it was a bit chaotic as they only announced the gate we were to leave from about 8 minutes before the train was due to depart! So there were masses of people trying to rush through the security gates to get to the Inverness train! Clement had a bit of a panic as we were getting onto the train (he seems very claustrophobic and doesn't cope well with small spaces) so he kept trying to climb out of the train as we were arranging the bags! We finally got seated in a *very* hot coach. And we waited for a while before finding out that one of the coaches was out of action due to an electric fault, meaning people mean to be there would have to find seats elsewhere. And due to the coach being "out" the train staff couldn't go from one end of the train to the other, so we travelled for about an hour with NO windows open and everyone was pouring sweat! The crowded train meant there were cyclists with their bikes in the toilets and they were sitting on the floors, etc. Peter managed to find a cyclist who had an Allen key in his bag, and at last, we could open the windows and get a bit of air! Arriving in Perth it was evident that there weren't enough seats for people and there were very hot people standing everywhere in the train! But before it left the station (after a long delay) they decided it was better for people to sit in a train with no lights/toilets/electricity rather than standing everywhere all the way to Inverness! So that at least meant it was less crowded, though I'm thankful we weren't in that coach! We missed our connection in Inverness but a later train to Kyle & Wick (which splits in Dingwall) was held for all of us, and at last, we were home-bound, arriving only 1 hour late! :-) I have to admit, it was very good to be home after that last leg of the journey! But we all came home with colds (and it was a cold that made Benjamin sick in the car, as he vomits very easily when he has a cold and was sick in the train too!), but thankfully he's a lot better now. Clement has been teething since the beginning of last week, has a cold, and also has some sort of tummy upset (which no one else has) so he's quite majorly grumpy for the past week or so, but hopefully he'll be his normal happy self soon!

And that's the end of our holiday! Back to chores at home and plenty of laundry to be done! Well, it's all washed as of Saturday, but piles to be put away! So I must get busy!

Ordinary days

A blog post from me again (just because I felt like it!) and less photo heavy too, which is probably a good thing! :)

Child labour here! ;-) Except they were having lots of fun, so didn't know they were actually working! Shelling some peas for dinner - no, not homegrown or even local, but they were British and in-season and tasted lovely (from Lidl).

Speaking of Benjamin, we finally got to see a dermatology nurse at the hospital last week! We had asked for a referral last year but the main nurse who deals with eczema was off work due to having an operation, so we "only" saw a dermatologist, who apparently was less qualified to help us than the nurse! So we didn't really get anywhere and I didn't pursue anything further. But last month I was feeling quite desperate with his eczema, so I phoned up the dermatology department to see if they'd let me speak to a nurse for advice. They let me talk to someone but said that my referral was no longer valid since 3 months had passed since I'd last had contact with them. So I had to see a local GP and ask if they'd write and ask for a referral again! The locum GP was very reluctant to refer me, saying there wasn't much more they could do for me there that a local GP couldn't! Grrr! But she did finally agree. So a few weeks later we got a phone call from dermatology to say they had a cancellation for the following week and would we like it. The timing couldn't have been better, as Benjamin's skin was getting to an extreme point again (as seems to happen at least every 3 weeks or so). However, when we turned up at 3:15pm on Tuesday last week, the lady at the desk told us there was nothing down to say Benjamin was meant to be seen, and the slots were all filled up with other young children. They couldn't find anyone to accept the blame for their mistake but said the nurse would still see Benjamin (thankfully!) but we'd need to wait till the end of the clinic (at least 4:20), so we had to wander around for an hour or so and came back, and eventually were seen at about a quarter to 5pm! Of course, by that stage and after such a long wait, Benjamin was exhausted and quite stressed out and couldn't really cope with being seen by the lady. :( She was able to see what the state of his skin was like and then Peter took him & Abigail out of the room so Benjamin could relax, and I got to talk to the nurse. She feels that Benjamin is very atopic and basically reacts to loads of things in his environment, making it very hard to prevent the eczema or keep it under control. I had wanted to know her opinion on using Fucibet Lipid Cream, as Benjamin's skin responds very well to it and clears up completely after only 5 days, but I'd been told that using it every 3 weeks was too frequent. It has a strong steroid in it (betamethasone) as well as an antibiotic, and the leaflet says to not use it on under 6s. She agreed that it's strong and we don't want to use it too frequently, but that it's important to manage the eczema, and that often strong steroids are necessary for someone who is so atopic. But she has prescribed a slightly less strong steroid called Elocon (mometasone furoate) to use in-between and hopefully allow us to go longer without using the Fucibet. She's also suggested an antihistamine which has a sedative in it, but I've not yet tried it on him, as he didn't react well to ones in the past. I might give it a try sometime if he's really restless/itchy, but hope to avoid using it if possible. Anyway, we'll see how things go over the next couple of weeks. I've also got some Dexeryl emollient to use on him, which we had a sample of last year. He seems to like it (something that rarely happens with any creams) so whilst it's not totally natural (has parabens, etc) it's not too thick and seems to help with the severe dry skin on his hands, so it would be nice if it helped a bit.

And while Abigail was busy being a pirate, Benjamin insisted that he was going to do schoolwork! It doesn't matter that he's only 3 years old, and that it's the summer holidays, this was his activity of choice! LOL

Not a very good self portrait! I was trying to take a picture of a maternity top that I made for myself! I've gotten totally fed up with trying to buy decent tops - can't find anything in shops that I like, and when I think something looks OK on the internet, it's never quite the right fit when it arrives (awful low neck-lines!). So at last, something that fits - is long enough to cover a tummy and has a good neckline! Now to find the time to make a couple of more to get me through the next 11.5 weeks! LOL

Fun Summer Days

It seems we've had quite a few fun days over the past week or so. Nice weather certainly helps and makes it more enjoyable to be outside. Of course, being out makes life a bit more busy, especially when you have a little guy like this:



Yes, he decided to climb the small table to see if he could reach the keys so he could get out the front door. He hadn't realised that there was actually a key already in the door.

Later when he found the key, he turned it and pulled it out. He didn't actually get out the door on this occasion, but later in the day he put a chair up to the door and successfully opened it by himself! He seems very keen to escape, as he *loves* being outdoors!

And if you only saw this photo above, you might think he was a calm big baby! (I think sleepsuits make them look all cuddly and little again, as he's often in "big boy" 2 piece pyjama sets.)

On Saturday last week we went to Invergordon as they were having their yearly Port Open Day with fun things for children to do and see. This large cruise ship happened to be in port for the day (an even bigger one was there the previous week).

After the morning in Invergordon, we went out to Easter Ross Organics to pick up a box of organic vegetables and some lovely organic eggs!

On Monday my friend Sharon came with her 2 wee girls. We had a lovely morning/lunch and the children all had lots of fun together. After lunch we went around the corner to a new play area that has been made. It's fantastic and sooo close to home - we don't even have to cross any roads to get to it!

My boys are really starting to do things together (in a good way rather than the bigger one causing the little one terror! lol). It's lovely to see them looking at books together, talking to each other, and playing with toys, etc.


On Thursday we had to be in Inverness for 9:30am so Abigail could see the pediatrician. It was just a follow-up appointment, as we had already been told that the results were fine from both the bloods and the ECG. Thankfully the leg cramps Abigail was having a couple of months ago have just about disappeared, so she doesn't have to go back again unless anything worse happens.

After the hospital, Peter dropped the children and me off in the centre of town and he went back home. I did a bit of shopping and then met my friend Ruth and her 2 children for lunch. We had a nice time, though there wasn't much time before I had to catch the 1:59 train to get home! Oh yes, and while we were in Inverness, we got a new proper bike for Benjamin!

Then on Friday afternoon, we went pond dipping with several other local homeschooling families! The weather was perfect (sunny & warm) and we had lots of fun! And best of all, the spot the group was going to was only 2 miles from our house! A man from the local council was there to do the educational bit and tell us what everything was, etc.
